Positioning Fem in the Transformation of Spatial Design to Structural Design

چکیده
In the field of architecture, structural topology is the set of locations, types (i.e. beams, columns), and arrangements of structural elements. To help the architect in understanding the structural topology for his spatial design, research exists that studies the process of the transformation of a spatial design into a structural design. If the Finite Element Method (FEM) is applied in this research, two problems can occur: (1) how to transform a topology in a mechanical system and FEM-input and (2) how can FEM support qualitative design decisions. In this paper, it is tried to define these two problems more clearly by developing data(EXPRESS)and process(IDEF0)-models for three transformations: From structural topology to mechanical system, from mechanical system to finite element model, and from finite element model to design recommendations. A six-level apartment building is used as a case study to test and supplement the dataand process-models for all three transformations. It can be concluded that the dataand process models are useful at their abstract level, but that many problems at lower abstraction levels remain to be solved.

Based on introducing two optimization algorithms, group search optimization (GSO) algorithm and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, a new hybrid optimization algorithm which named particle swarm-group search optimization (PS-GSO) algorithm is presented and its application to optimal structural design is analyzed. The PS-GSO is used to investigate the spatial truss structures with discr...
متن کاملFEM Updating for Offshore Jacket Structures Using Measured Incomplete Modal Data
Marine industry requires continued development of new technologies in order to produce oil. An essential requirement in design is to be able to compare experimental data from prototype structures with predicted information from a corresponding analytical finite element model. In this study, structural model updating may be defined as the fit of an existing analytical model in the light of measu...

متن کاملInfluence of initial spatial layout on seismic behavior of masonry buildings with curved roof systems
Early design decisions made on building configuration and spatial design affect seismic behavior of buildings. Therefore introducing design guidelines and empirical methods implemented to assess seismic behavior of buildings have been proposed as an appropriate approach. Such concept helps architects to take into the consideration that how their preliminary design decisions influence downstream...
متن کاملBeam & Shell Models for Composite Straight or Curved Bridge Decks with Intermediate Diaphragms & Assessment of Design Specifications
In this research effort, the generalized warping and distortional problem of straight or horizontally curved composite beams of arbitrary cross section, loading and boundary conditions is presented. An inclined plane of curvature is considered. Additionally, the stiffness of diaphragmatic plates has been introduced in the formulation in order to compare with the case where rigid diaphragms are ...
